Plaza Mexico

Fifty-two years of taurine history

Plaza Mexico is the result of Neguib Simonīs dream, a businessman from Yucatan. He wanted to build a deportive city. In this, there was going to be a bullfighting Plaza, a soccer stadium, tennis courts, a jai-Alai court, a bowling alley, movie theaters, restaurants, a boxing and wrestling ring, swimming pools and an exposition center. Nevertheless, only Plaza Mexico and the soccer stadium (Blue Stadium of Cruz Azul soccer team) were built.

Modesto Rolland was the engineer who made Neguib Simon's dream come true. Construction began in December 1, 1944, into the hole of a brick factory. In that time, the plaza was in the border of the city. Plaza Mexico is a monumental concrete's structure. The statues that encircle the plaza are Alfredo Just's design.

Plaza Mexico was inaugurated in February 5, 1946. In the first card were Luis Castro "El Soldado", Manuel Rodriguez "Manolete" and Luis Procuna. Bulls were from San Mateo's ranch.

Though in Mexico there are plazas older than Plaza Mexico, no one has the history, the names and the triumphs that Plaza Mexico has. Furthermore, Plaza Mexico is the biggest and most confortable one in all the world.
